This course offers an analytical and critical survey of political theory from Ancient Greece through the Renaissance. Readings may include Thucydides, Plato, Sophocles, Aristotle, Cicero, Augustine, Aquinas, Dante, and Machiavelli. Topics may include the origins of the state and political authority, pre-modern understandings of morality and justice, the ethics of imperialism and war, and democratic and non-democratic models of citizenship.
