The minor in geological sciences includes foundational courses in geology that cover topics such as plate tectonics, oceans, the atmosphere and climate.
You'll also be able to chose from a range of electives, including courses in earth materials and geochemistry, earth history and field methods. You can select additional upper-level electives, in consultation with a geological sciences advisor, that match your interests and round out your program of study.
Our program offers you the chance to study and get involved in undergraduate research opportunities in the many natural laboratories of Nevada, California and the western United States. You can also take advantage of opportunities to gain hands-on experience in our well-equipped research labs or out in the field through courses and research projects, working closely with research-active professors at the University.
Geological engineering is a relatively rare degree with only 13 undergraduate programs nation-wide. This makes its graduates and their unique training extremely sought after. Faculty in the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering work closely with undergraduate students to provide hands-on experience in a wide range of work environments, helping you to graduate with a set of skills that are in high demand in Nevada and around the world.

The geological sciences minor is part of the Mackay School, which cultivates relationships with local agencies and organizations to ensure that our graduates have the skills and training the employers are looking for. Information sessions, career fairs and resume workshops help you prepare to enter the job market and provide exposure to the industries that employ geological sciences graduates.
