The University will join the rest of the Nevada System of Higher Education in the Great Nevada ShakeOut on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, at 10:16 AM. The statewide earthquake drill is part of a broader international effort to promote earthquake readiness and safety.

Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the U.S., which means that knowing how to protect yourself is essential. Whether you are in class, at work, or in the dorms, this is your chance to practice the simple actions that can save lives.

What to Expect During the Drill:
At exactly 10:16 a.m. on October 16, an earthquake alert will go out across campus. As part of the drill, the University will be testing its emergency alert systems concurrently. This will include SMS, email, and other communication alert methods.

That is your cue to practice the lifesaving steps:

  • DROP to the ground.
  • COVER your head and neck (and get under a sturdy desk or table if possible).
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
  • ADAPT if needed:
    • With a cane: Drop or sit on a chair or bed, cover your head, and keep your cane nearby.
    • In a wheelchair: Lock your wheels, bend forward, and cover your head and neck.
    • No cover available: Move next to an interior wall, crouch down, and protect your head and neck.

How to get ready

  • Make a Plan: Know evacuation routes, assembly points, and how you will reconnect with family and friends. Secure heavy furniture and items that could fall.
  • Build a Kit: Stock up on essential items to get by for a few days on your own ()
  • Stay Informed: Update your personal contact information in Workday, PeopleSoft, or Canvas. Download your campus safety app:
